Photo finishes are supposed to be for sprints, not 5Ks.

At the 40th Annual Doug Conley Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Rolling Hills Golf Course, a finish-line snapshot was almost needed. Tucson Salpointe Catholic's Andy Trouard edged Tempe Corona del Sol's Nate Rodriguez by .52 seconds to win the boys varsity race, and Tempe Desert Vista's Dani Jones beat Tempe senior Diana Garcia by 1.43 seconds in the girls varsity race.

Trouard finished in 15:36.48 and Jones finished in 18:47.50.

Both races were neck and neck going into the final stretch. Trouard was able to hold on for the last 100 meters with Rodriguez on his heels. Jones eclipsed Garcia in the final 30 meters or so.

“I don't think I believe it yet,” Jones said.

Garcia and Jones traded leads throughout the girls race, but halfway through the boys event Trouard found himself all alone.

“I think it just kind of unmotivated me a little bit,” he said. “Then I just hear (Rodriguez) right behind me.”

It was the first victory at Conley for both runners. Jones placed 30th last year as a freshman. Trouard — ranked 24th nationally among high school males by milesplit.us until three days ago — is in his first year of cross country after spending the first three years of high school on the swim team.

Much about cross country is still new to him, especially the difficult, hilly terrain at Rolling Hills.

“I really like the course,” he said. “It's a challenge. It's the first time I've run a course with this many hills.”

Jones' victory helped Desert Vista to a second-place showing with 79 points, finishing behind Phoenix Xavier College Prep's 52. Xavier's A team is running in a California meet next week, so its B team ran at Conley for the third consecutive year.

Xavier lost by two points in 2010, and won last year.

Xavier placed three runners in the top 10 — McKenna Gaffney (3rd, 18:52.65), Lauren Kinzle (4th, 19:01.96) and Savanna Gaffney (8th, 19:32.23).

Rio Rico claimed the boys title with 72 points, beating Tuba City by 59.

All five scoring runners for Rio Rico placed in the top 20, led by Rob Contreras' seventh-place finish in 16:07.98.
