This is on azcentral.com today:

You would think these guys would be embarrassed to call themselves journalists when it takes them this long to finally weigh in on an issue. And when they finally do, they still only report on the Div. II issues without mentioning other examples of lower seeded teams who were helped out by a poor decision by the rules committee.

I knew that it was probably a committee of coaches and AD's who approved the idea of moving section tourney champs into the top seeds for the state tournament, but the AIA is where the buck stops (lots of bucks, actually) so they should do everything they can to protect their product which is the state tournament.

Solution:

Hold a true sectional tournament with all section teams involved. Continue to tally power point rankings from results of games in the section tournament. Seed teams in the state tournament based on solely on power point rankings following sectional tournaments. This gives teams that started slowly but have improved during the season a chance to get some wins toward the end and possibly make it into the state tournament. The good teams in most cases will keep winning, and will not lose much ground with a loss in a sectional tournament. In Div. III Section 4 both Holbrook and Blue Ridge deserved the chance to play in the section tournament by virtue of having beaten Show Low in the regular season. Neither of them got the chance under the current system. Including all teams would only add one or two rounds in most cases. More basketball, more revenue, more fun, and more valid than the current way things are done.
