Payson Invitational

Safford, our "surprise" team, surprised us even more after beating Tuba City to win the tournament title.

Friday's pool winners: Florence, Tuba City, Safford, Agua Fria.

Bracket rankings after cross pool play: No. 1 Tuba City, No. 2 Safford, No. 3 Agua Fria, No. 4 Florence.

Florence went 3-3, Tuba City 3-3, Safford 3-3, Agua Fria

Championship: Safford def. Tuba City, 25-14 in a one-game championship.

From Payson coach Arnold Stonebrink: "Safford ended up winning the tournament, but not without a fight from Tuba City. From the losers bracket Tuba beat Safford, setting up a one-game for-all-the-marbles championship. Safford dominated that, 25-14."

Third-place: Florence.

Fourth-place: Payson.

Consolation title: Joseph City def. Show Low.

Great play by the top four teams. Good to see how well Safford, Florence, and Tuba have all improved since last season and are still competitive!

BR was there, but they seemed to be struggling day 2. They were putting up a fight every match that I got to see....but I guess they didn't have enough to finish. I dont know exactly what their final finish was either.

The Jackets are struggling this year. They lost a strong senior class and these younger girls have been having difficulty getting into the groove. The Sophomore Libero is at this point the only standout even though there are several returning varsity girls. Time will tell if they can come together but the way things are looking, a mediocre season is the best that can be hoped for.
